NJ Smart Choices

Building the movement for smart land use
and transportation planning in New Jersey.

2007: The Leadership Institute

The New Jersey Smart Choices Leadership Institute was a four-day intensive workshop held in March 2007 at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The Leadership Institute brought together seven local teams from eight municipalities across the state: Asbury Park, Fair Haven, Middlesex, Hamilton, Raritan, Orange/West Orange and Toms River. The purpose of the Institute was to:

  • Provide community leaders with the knowledge, skills and means to more successfully integrate transportation planning and local land use decision-making;
  • Provide an environment where leaders can learn from each other, and join a growing network of committed individuals whose ongoing collaborations will foster smart growth solutions and sustainable community change throughout New Jersey; and
  • Seek to identify "champions for change" and provide them with techniques and tools that will allow them to be more effective leaders in their respective municipalities.

Posted below are some of the materials produced, distributed or presented at the Leadership Institute (more will be posted as they become available):
